Is World Environment Day just Earth Day’s quieter cousin?

Is World Environment Day just Earth Day’s quieter cousin?

You wouldn’t be alone if you’ve never heard of it.

World Environment Day happens every year on June 5. Established by the United Nations in 1973, it’s now observed by over 150 countries as a global moment to reflect on how we treat our planet and how we can do better.

This year, the focus is clear: “Beat Plastic Pollution.”

The message is simple, but urgent: plastic pollution is choking our planet, and it’s time to act together.

More than 400 million tons of plastic are produced each year, and nearly half of that is designed for single use. A staggering amount ends up in landfills, rivers, and oceans, places it was never meant to be. The impact on ecosystems, wildlife, and even human health is impossible to ignore.

At RAIN, this isn’t just a headline… it’s a call we’ve been answering from day one.

Our water comes from a natural spring in the Appalachian Mountains, one of the rainiest and most naturally replenished areas in the country. We bottle that water in aluminum, not plastic because aluminum can be recycled over and over again without losing quality.

We know aluminum isn't the only answer. But it's a better one.

And World Environment Day isn’t about doing everything, it’s about doing something. Making smarter choices. Choosing the better option when it's available. Recognizing that small actions add up, especially when we act collectively.

Here’s how you can be part of it:

  • Skip single-use plastic bottles by refilling or choosing recyclable materials like aluminum or glass.

  • Bring your own bags and containers when shopping or dining out.

  • Say no to plastic straws, utensils, and excessive packaging whenever you can.

  • Support brands that are working toward sustainable packaging solutions.

  • Share the message because awareness leads to action.

The plastic crisis wasn’t created overnight, and it won’t be solved by one person.

But millions of small choices, made every day, have power.

So this June 5, take the opportunity to do something better.

For the rivers. For the oceans. For the land. For the future.
