The Dirty Secret of Recycling and the Truth About Our Water
You know the symbol. The three little chasing arrows stamped on plastic water bottles. For decades, the beverage industry has trained us to feel a warm glow of environmental virtue every time we toss clear plastic into a recycling bin. We did our part, right?
Here is the reality: in the United States, the plastic recycling rate currently sits at a dismal 5%. Even on a global scale, only about 9% of all plastic waste generated actually gets recycled.
The system is not just failing, it is a myth designed to keep you buying cheap disposable products.
Plastic recycling is essentially a dead end. When you recycle plastic, it does not magically become a new plastic bottle. The material degrades each time it is processed, making it difficult to recycle back into the same quality product. This is called downcycling. Eventually, that material reaches the end of its useful life and sits in a landfill for centuries, breaking down into microplastics.
We wanted to build a bottled water company that actually provides solutions, which means rethinking both the vessel and the water inside it. Here is how we bring the entire vision together.
The Aluminum Infinite Loop
We package RAIN in one hundred percent recyclable aluminum because it does not degrade when melted. When you toss an empty RAIN bottle into a recycling bin, it can be melted down and turned into a brand new high quality aluminum product. It could be another RAIN bottle, a bicycle frame, or something completely different. The exact same material can be recycled over and over again without losing its fundamental properties.
And the numbers behind aluminum are pretty impressive. Recycled aluminum takes about 95% less energy to produce than new aluminum. Aluminum beverage cans in the U.S. contain an average of 71% recycled content. Nearly 97% of recycled aluminum beverage cans go on to become new cans, helping create a closed loop.
That circularity is a big reason nearly 75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in use today. Instead of becoming waste at the end of its first life, aluminum can keep moving through the economy again and again.
Beyond the environmental impact, aluminum just works better for hydration. It is highly thermally conductive, meaning if you drop your RAIN bottle in an ice chest, it gets icy cold in a fraction of the time it takes plastic. Plus, the completely opaque aluminum body blocks UV rays. You never have to experience that gross, baked chemical taste of a plastic bottle left in a hot car.
Pure Appalachian Sourcing
There is no point in creating a premium, sustainable aluminum bottle just to fill it with heavily processed municipal city water.
We source RAIN directly from natural springs deep in the Appalachian mountains, and unlike conventional water extraction, we do not rely on mechanical pumping. The water flows naturally from the source, and we bottle it at the source, working with the spring’s natural flow rather than forcing water from the ground.
We believe in taking what nature naturally provides, without asking the source to give more than it can.
Small Choices MatterÂ
Hydration is essential. How we get it is a choice. If you have access to clean tap water and a reusable bottle, drink that. It is the absolute best thing you can do for the planet. But when you are on the go and need to buy packaged water, demand absolute transparency, demand better materials, and stop settling for the blue bin myth.
